Do you have a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation? I will never forget the Cutting of the Cake at my sister Mary’s wedding. Her husband’s family followed a custom in which the mother of the groom would put an apron on the bride to symbolize the passing on of domestic duties and care of her son. Dan and Mary were a typical modern couple who both worked full time and planned to share household tasks, so the idea of participating in this tradition did not thrill Mary. However, she was reluctant to offend her new mother-in-law, especially after she found out that LaVern had lovingly crocheted a beautiful lacy white apron to complement her wedding gown. Fortunately, Mary found a way to honor the family tradition while also maintaining her convictions. When the time came to cut the wedding cake and Mary’s apron was being tied, her new husband Dan stood at her side grinning smugly. But… His smirk did not last long. In a prearranged move, the best man whipped out a beautiful red organdy apron trimmed with white lace (lovingly created by Mary herself). He put it on Dan and explained to the guests that this was a new tradition to symbolize the bride and groom’s intent to share household responsibilities. It was a great way to honor a treasured old custom and at the same time establish a meaningful new one. And it was definitely fun!

Please share traditions, both old and new, that have been meaningful to your family.
